Mauro Hertig, Bastian Zimmermann: Sacrificial G.O.A.T.

Sacrifical G.O.A.T. invites visitors to let out their rage in the form of screams and smashes and to sacrifice it to the stage by means of sound samples. The two metal musicians Sara Neidorf (drums) and Matt Hollenberg (guitar) create a musical transformation of this sonicized rage, which can finally be received lying down. The ritual lasts 50 minutes and a limited number of guests can make the sacrifice. The others witness the procedure.

The heavy metal ritual Sacrificial G.O.A.T. was inspired by the film Rock my Religion by Dan Graham with Patti Smith, in which rock’n’roll, rock and hard rock are read as heirs to the religious US shaker rituals. A special focus is placed on the reaction of a highly productive early capitalist society against the disciplining of the Protestant free church. Repressed feelings of anger towards the organizing authority were given space by the church in the form of Shaker rituals, which became controlled places of ecstasy.

The post-metal duo Sarattma, featuring Berlin-based metal drummer and horror film festival curator Sara Neidorf and New York guitarist Matt Hollenberg, have been around since 2012, releasing their debut EP Inner Spaces in 2017 and their debut album Escape Velocity in 2022, which they say is about the representation of illness and pain as an alien invasion of the body.

Biography

Mauro Hertig

Mauro Hertig (*1989 in Zurich) is a composer and musician who works primarily with ensemble and chamber formations, often in situation-specific contexts. He creates concerts as gaming scenarios in which he ritualistically uses the sounds of intimate speech, touch and verbal instructions – including Losing the Red Queen’s Race with the Basel Sinfonietta, a piece for blindfolded orchestra. Most recently with Archival Serpent at Impuls Graz, in which the ensemble digests the musical archive of the concert venue as a hungry snake.
