Huihui Cheng (*1985 in Wu-Chang, China) focuses on »theatrically enhanced composition« in her works. She discovers optical figures in the music and gives the sound a theatrical meaning to increase the expressive potential of the music. In doing so, she experiments with different materials, costumes, movements, expanded objects and lighting, and makes use of intermedial elements such as dance, performance or video installation. All these means of expression aim at communication as the central theme of her artistic work: communication between performers, between people and machines, and with the audience.
Huihui Cheng studied composition with Guoping Jia at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and with Caspar Johannes Walter at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart. She received the first prize at the International Isang Yun Composition Prize (2011) and Giga-Hertz- Production Prize of ZKM Karlsruhe (2016). A portrait CD of Edition Zeitgenössische Musik was released by WERGO in 2020.
