Nicholas Kok

Nicholas Kok studied at New College Oxford and the Royal College of Music in London and was principal conductor of the East of England Orchestra (Sinfonia Viva) from 1996 to 2006. Since 2007, he has been principal conductor of Psappha, the leading ensemble for contemporary music in northern England. At English National Opera, he has conducted Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo and Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Così fan tutte, as well as two world premieres by Mark-Anthony Turnage. With Opera North, Nicholas Kok has worked on Dido and Aeneas, Les Noces, the original Italian version of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and the world premiere of Simon Holt’s The Nightingale’s to blame. He also conducts various programmes at the Edinburgh International Festival. He has worked with the Philharmonia and London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, the Hallé Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, among others. Numerous radio and CD recordings accompany his work.
