Sarah Maria Sun is considered one of the most outstanding interpreters of contemporary music. Her repertoire includes 2,000 compositions from the 16th to the 21st century, among them more than 400 world premieres. She regularly performs at renowned festivals, opera houses, and concert halls around the world, collaborating with some of the most prominent orchestras, ensembles, conductors, and directors. Her portrayal of the »Compagna« in Luigi Nono’s Intolleranza 1960 at the Salzburg Festival in 2021 was celebrated by the international press. She was nominated as Singer of the Year for her interpretations of complex female characters, such as the dual role of Elsa/Lohengrin in Salvatore Sciarrino’s monodrama Lohengrin at the Salzburg Easter Festival in 2017, and for her role as Gwen in Philip Venables’ 4.48 Psychosis at Semper Zwei in Dresden in 2019. From 2007 to 2015, she was the first soprano of the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, a chamber ensemble of seven singers that has been a pioneer in contemporary music for decades. Since 2012 the pianist Jan Philip Schulze and her are performing as a Lied-Duo. Together with the clarinetist Kilian Herold they founded the Trio »Silence is Golden«.

 

Sarah Maria Sun’s discography comprises more than 40 CDs, many of which have received awards or nominations. She is also an illustrator and author of children’s books and releases her own songs with the band Titillating Tofu. She curates art projects, serves as the Artistic Director of the John Cage Academy Halberstadt, and has been a professor at the Basel Academy of Music since 2022.
