Istanbul in the 60s. Filmed with an 8 mm camera by Şabuh Mıgırdiç Kuyumcuyan, my grandfather.
Images of my family and my homeland are shown through different windows of the past. A personally incomprehensible time. Strange characters, strange places that seem familiar to me through my awareness of my memories.
Inspired by the painting »The Garden of Earthly Delights« by Hieronymus Bosch, I composed »De Tuin« in 2017, a miniature with three phrases for vibraphone and amplified zither.

Emil Kuyumcuyan

Emil Kuyumcuyan (*1993 in Istanbul) is a percussionist, composer and electronic musician with Croatian, Greek, Armenian and African roots. Born in a house full of music, he grew up with many different musical genres. At the age of twelve, he began his musical education at the Mimar Sinan State Conservatory in Istanbul, where he initially played the trombone before discovering his passion for percussion. After leaving school, he studied percussion at the Stuttgart State University of Music and Performing Arts with Marta Klimasara, Klaus Dreher, Jürgen Spitschka and Harald Löhle and with Jean Geoffroy at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon.

The versatile musician performs as a percussionist primarily in the contemporary classical music scene and composes instrumental and electronic music. His concert programs consist of commissioned works, existing repertoire and his own compositions. He regularly collaborates with contemporary composers and is active in the fields of multimedia performance and music theater. In 2019, he created his first audiovisual work entitled »I S T A N B U L | the roots«, a multimedia performance inspired by the city, consisting of his own compositions and a commissioned work by Adrien Trybucki. In 2023, he released his first electronic album »It’s Not About Me« on WIC Recordings, incorporating elements of IDM and drum and bass while showcasing his classical music background. Since October 2023 Emil Kuyumcuyan is professor for percussion at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. He also enjoys spending time with his family and friends, is a ramen lover, loves cooking, the sun, a fall walk, Paris, linguistics, reading and doing unnecessary things.
