Tristan Murail: Doppler-Variationen

für Gitarrenquartettt

This piece considers the guitar quartet as a huge  microtonal 24-string guitar: the 4 guitars are tuned at  an interval of one 8th of tone from each other. This micro-tuning allows the realisation of complex and unusual timbral and harmonic combinations, as well as harmonic »drifts« analog to Doppler effects.

Some »extended techniques«  are used, and also, many playing techniques inspired by flamenco music (rasgueado, dedillo, golpe…).

The form of the piece is also  somewhat inspired by flamenco music, especially, »bulerias« , where participants sing (and dance) in turnsemi-improvised songs based on short poems, interleaved with guitar solos and exclamations from the rest of the group of players and singers.
