Arnulf Herrmann: high and low and fast and slow

für Orchester

The orchestra’s maximum range: from the highest speed, atomised into small, interlocking particles, to widely oscillating, breathing lines of the utmost slowness. The material, which is essentially the same or very similar, thus creates completely different worlds of expression.

But nothing happens mechanically. As soon as the speed or something else changes, the entire apparatus reacts. Everything interacts, is alert, is related to each other: an organism, a community of individuals, ultimately a utopia.
