Giovanni Bertelli: Monarca

The monarch butterfly, native to North America, is known for a migration unique in the insect kingdom: every year it travels from the border between the United States and Canada to the mountains of central Mexico and back again.

Beyond migration, the piece also draws inspiration from the butterfly’s flight itself—specifically from the form of its movement, understood as a kind of »kinetic unit.« The work thus explores, in a personal and explicitly provisional way, the relationship between virtual movement and the sonic world. In this sense, Monarca can be considered a study in synesthesia: the lepidopteran’s movements are transformed into musical gestures, and its trajectories are translated from time to time into structures or spectral alterations.

The piece therefore presents itself as an investigation of movement, understood not only as a physical phenomenon, but as a force capable of articulating time and giving expression to the sonic experience.

Giovanni Bertelli was born in Verona, Italy, in 1980. After completing his studies in piano, composition, and philosophy in his hometown, he pursued advanced studies in composition at the Paris Conservatoire (CNSMDP) with Stefano Gervasoni. He was selected for the IRCAM Cursus programme from 2010 to 2012. In 2016 he was composer-in-residence with Divertimento Ensemble, and in 2018 he was among the resident members at the French Academy in Madrid–Casa de Velázquez. In 2020 he defended his doctoral thesis at PSL University in Paris, entitled For a Theatrical Music: Gesture, Sound, Writing.

During his time in France, he came into contact with numerous figures who had a strong impact on his aesthetic development, in particular Frédéric Durieux, Francesco Filidei, Mauro Lanza, and Yan Maresz.
He is currently Professor of Composition at the Maderna-Lettimi Conservatory of Cesena and Rimini (Italy).

His work lives in the tension between two opposing issues: on the one hand, a semantic and postmodern approach that questions why music seems to strive to signify something that always intrinsically eludes us; on the other, a kind of disorientation arising from the realization that the sonic world—whether considered as an intangible object of perception or as the result of precise structural calculations—is in fact grounded in physical gestures and bodily actions, and vice versa.

Bertelli seeks to inhabit this unstable and telluric territory through works that are often fragmentary, elliptical, and labyrinthine, in which »one is reminded of the image and the very sensation of a postmodern wandern, pierced by searing points, permeated by a sense of loss of reference points and disintegration that leaves no room for consoling horizons of any kind, but instead compels a continuous process of reflection and awareness.« (Cesare Fertonani)
