Malin Bång: unfurling

»Unfurling« is a discovery of coexisting memories, as territories of perception from the present and the past.

In my earlier concerto »marled« for inside piano and orchestra I explored different sonic rooms–from the closest articulate surrounding until the faint horizon at the distance. In »unfurling« with the guitar as our cicerone, I continue the idea of rooms, but rather inner rooms, and the layers of memories that are connected as a complex weave within us. A trigger in our everyday life suddenly brings back a scream from the past with painful reality. Another memory might be dwelling like a faint but relentless whisper, waiting for the noise to disappear to enter the stage of consciousness. Chronological time is challenged by surging waves of reminiscence. And when a specific room is about to unfold, time might freeze, as if a wave transformed into ice just at the moment of disrupting.

The guitar and the orchestra are entwined in a flow of constantly changing conditions, where the soloist occasionally takes the role of the catalyst, and at other times is submerged in the orchestral currents.

Malin Bång, born in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1974, is composer in residence and a founding member of the Curious Chamber Players. Since 2018, she has been teaching composition at the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg. She is also a regular visiting professor in cities such as Aarhus, Copenhagen, Dresden, Cologne, Barcelona and Ghent, and teaches at the Darmstadt Summer Courses and the Impuls Festival in Graz. In 2021, she was elected a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin and in 2022 a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

Malin Bång’s music explores specific subject matters through a lens of physicality, motion, and energy. She defines her musical material by its inherent degree of friction, where the tension within each musical action becomes the core carrier of meaning. This approach often generates a spectrum of contrasting sounding situations, ranging from the fragile and barely audible to the harsh and obstinate. In her work she often incorporates acoustic objects to expand the sound possibilities and to suggest that a musical content can be shaped by anything valuable to the artistic idea.
