Who makes history and in whose interest? How does it relate to the truth? Is memory fiction? For Svetlana Alexijewitsch, the truth lies in the polyphonic juxtaposition of the experiences of hundreds of uncrowned, anonymous »hero*ines of everyday life«, as she documents them in her book Secondhand-Zeit. The composer Sergej Newski places some of these life stories as musical fragments of memory between Modest Mussorgski’s historical tableaux. They are exemplary for the collapse of the wars for power and ideals in the protected enclaves of love and family. In BORIS, Newski’s new composition interlocks with Mussorgski’s 1869 composed opera to form a common narrative.
