Genoël von Lilienstern: Unsupervised Sounds

A mutual learning process between Ensemble Garage and an artificial intelligence.

(2022)

With the method of unsupervised sound learning we enter new musical territory. In Unsupervised Sounds, six musicians* (Annegret Mayer-Lindenberg, Małgorzata Walentynowicz, Ramón Gardella, Frank Riedel, Till Künkler and Steffen Ahrens) and an artificial intelligence come together in a sound laboratory. They are exploring »unconditional computing« and »koan learning.« A process with incalculable logic is set in motion.
The sequences of the strictly scientific setup are marked by precision disco lasers. The intelligence of the AI has reached a level where it thinks it is allowed to allow itself minor inaccuracies and also the odd tantrum when the musicians violate the rules. Gradually, the musical form of evolving variation proliferates from despotism into consensus between machine and human entities.
