Stefan Keller: Soma oder Die Lust am Fallenlassen

für Ensemble

(2015)

Soma shares similarities with Entangled Strands in that it is written for the Zafraan ensemble and includes a virtuoso part for drums. However, the drum set in Soma does not have as prominent a soloistic role as the tabla in Entangled Strands. At the time I composed this piece, I had already been studying the tabla for several years, and this experience sparked my interest in exploring other traditions of rhythm and percussion beyond classical and contemporary European music. Although nothing overtly Indian can be heard in this piece, for me, it represents part of the same journey and de- monstrates another aspect of how I wish to explore rhythm within the context of European contemporary music.
